Athletes to hold auction for Thon
Student athletes auction off their services to raise money for Thon 2001.

Dinner at The Tavern with the Crispin brothers.

Could this be a dream? No — that's just one of the many prizes being auctioned off at the second annual Athlete Auction at 7:30 tonight at Heritage Hall in the HUB.

The event is being sponsored by the Student Athlete Advisory Board to help raise money for the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon. Last year it raised $5,000 for Thon.

"Last year it went over surprisingly well," said Katie Schiller, Thon Communications Captain and liason between Thon and the Student Athlete Advisory Board. "It was a huge success. It's a good time for athletes to get together outside of their sports, and it benefits kids with cancer."

Each sports team will be represented at the auction offering different types of services.

Justin Kurpeikis, Mike Cerimele and Bob Jones will be auctioning off tours of the football building given by themselves. The women's lacrosse team will be offering a cleaning service.

One person will have the opportunity to be a batboy at a baseball game in the spring. And the Nittany Lion will be up for auction to appear at the winner's next party.

Other miscellaneous jobs will be offered by various sports teams, such as grocery shopping or snow shoveling . According to Schiller, although the women's basketball team will not be able to be at the auction, they will still be participating in the auction and have made a video clip to be shown to those in attendance.

"Being involved in this makes you feel pretty good," Jones said. "You raise money for people who really need it. It's an unbelievable feeling to know that the kids are happy."

To help raise even more money, a silent auction will also be held beginning at 6:30 p.m. directly outside of Heritage Hall. Items up for grabs include a basketball signed by former Penn State star and current center for the Orlando Magic John Amaechi, posters signed by various sports teams and a shirt signed by the soccer team.

Stacey Saggese and Chris Bagley, members of the women's lacrosse and men's swim teams are the emcees for the evening, and say that the auction will be run like a regular auction. People wishing to bid will be given paddles and a number and the bidding will begin.

"When I first came to Penn State, I associated it (Thon) strictly with fraternities and sororities," Bagley said. "But I went to where we met the Thon families and I realized it's not about athletes and sororities. It's about kids with cancer.

"It's for the kids and I'm just trying to do my part."
