Penn State's Master Plan harms campus aesthetics

I never knew part of Penn State's Master Plan for this campus included destroying its architectural legacy. The university has decided to build a new structure to house the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA).

This is all good and well, but part of that plan is the demolition of Engineering Units D and E, deemed too expensive to renovate.

Not only are the Engineering Units some of the oldest buildings on this campus, but they have architectural integrity and design that make them unique to their bland and uninspired surroundings. Currently the home to the SALA, the structures include original brickwork, tall ceilings and beautiful picture windows. They prove to be exciting places for the SALA students to work and learn.

Demolishing these building would just add to the register of lost treasures on this campus, including the original greenhouse of Old Botany and the Armory building, which stood where the architecturally worthless Willard Building now resides.

Is it just chance that the Engineering Units are close — maybe too close — to the new alumni center being built next door? Do people honestly think that a garden or parking lot would make better use of the space currently occupied by Units D and E? Don't let another piece of campus tradition and legacy be destroyed. We can't afford it.
