I feel that I have a responsibility as a citizen and a student to stand up to the recent trend of the articles in the Collegian. This campus, unlike what most would believe from the articles, is not Kent State, and we are not in the political protests of the '60s and '70s again. I believe that we need to focus on the stories that history will hold in higher regard.
I am very jaded by having read about every protest of George W. Bush. I was in attendance at the inauguration, and the far greater majority of people there were those who supported Bush. In this regard, I believe that the media coverage of the event should have accurately represented the larger story of the day.
The real reason for the inauguration was to continue 225 years of presidential tradition. I also believe that our nation needs to grow beyond the turmoil of the election and come together in a way that promotes progress while rejecting frivolous news, such as protests only because they have greater shock value.
I sincerely hope for every American that we never see protests as something that is wrong. But, in the case of the inauguration, the greater story did not lie in the hands of a few thousand protesters.
