Penn State not spending funds on what's important

I just want to call your attention to Monday's Collegian. On the front page is a beautiful drawing of the soon to be IST building for West campus, which will cost Penn State $58.5 million.

It also mentions the new graduate housing we have going into development for $30 million. That's great.

Now, let's look at the front page of yesterday's paper: "Left without housing, students weigh options."

Let's look at our priorities. I realize these buildings may come from different funding, but if I remember correctly, Penn State set a record in the amount of funding and grants they received last year. It was something like $701 million. I also realize those funds come with some stipulations.

However, undergraduates are homeless, which means their only other option is to pay inflated rent.

In addition, tuition goes up every year, parking is nonexistent, and most of our professors have stipulations in their contracts that say they will only do research, not teach those who will pay tuition, not to mention their paychecks.

We are throwing millions of dollars into buildings that will neither house undergrads nor fix any of our priority problems. I don't consider myself the smartest person in the world; however, this seems hard to believe. Don't get me wrong. 'I think Penn State is a wonderful school. But someone needs to speak up about the where our money is going.

It's like having a flat tire, but instead of fixing it, you buy fuzzy dice for your rear view mirror.
