[Monday,
Jan. 22, 2001 ] Today's University Park
forecast
The brilliant sunshine that made its debut in
Happy Valley yesterday will continue into midweek as high
pressure settles into the Northeast. A weak system will
follow, bringing considerable cloudiness and a few snow
flurries to the region. Behind it, a massive high
pressure system will deliver cool Canadian air, but
temperatures will return to seasonal levels by the
weekend.

Weather
Highlight
On this day in 1906, the temperature
sky-rocketed to 85°F in Freeport, Armstrong County, PA,
marking the highest temperature ever recorded in
December, January, or February anywhere in Pennsylvania.
At least one person died of heat stroke. Meanwhile, the
official government forecast for that day called for a
blizzard. This is one example of how the credence given
to forecasts today underscores the advances in
meteorology during the past century.
