The Bryce Jordan Center hosted wrestling history this weekend at the Cliff Keen/National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals.
Iowa State junior 184 pounder Cael Sanderson broke former Cyclone Dan Gable's record for consecutive wins with his 101st against Montclair State (N.J.)freshman Alex Aliakseyenka.
Sanderson defeated him by technical fall, 21-6.
"It's a pretty cool feeling," Sanderson said. "But I'm not really thinking about the record much. I know I have some good individuals to wrestle in this meet, and I'm just focused on going out and winning every match."
Sanderson had little trouble leaving the tournament unscathed, despite the presence of a number of highly ranked wrestlers in his class. In no match did he score less than a major decision, including a 14-3 major decision victory over Oklahoma State senior Dan Cormier, the No. 3 ranked wrestler at 183 pounds. He also pinned Michigan junior Andy Hrovat, ranked No. 11, in 38 seconds.
Sanderson was named the tournament's outstanding wrestler, leaving the tournament with his streak intact at 105 consecutive victories.
Sanderson's feats could not get the Cyclones a second consecutive dual meet title. Last year's runner up No. 2 Minnesota came from down 17-6 to defeat No.3 Iowa, in the semi-finals, and then defeated No. 1 Oklahoma State 20-12 for the championship.
"The key to today was intensity," Golden Gopher coach J. Robinson said. "Even the guys that lost came out and fought hard. That gives the next guy a boost. It sends a message. Every one of our guys fought today, and that's why we won."
Minnesota was tied with the Cowboys after four matches, when 157 pound sophomore Luke Becker, ranked No. 5 by Intermat, came up with the go ahead win over Shane Roller, the 11th ranked Cowboy sophomore. Senior 165 pounder Brad Pike, ranked third in the country, delivered a huge blow in the next match, pinning Oklahoma State senior Billy Gable to give the Gophers a 15-6 lead.
After a Cowboy win, freshman 184 pounder Damien Hahn, No. 4 at that weight, came up with a big win over No. 3 Dan Cormier. That basically sealed the deal for the Gophers, who won the match 20-12.
Sanderson's Cyclones lost their chance to repeat in the semifinals, losing 25-13 to Oklahoma State. The Cowboys won the first four matches including a pin by Reggie Wright, ranked No. 2 at 149 pounds to go up 16-0. The Cyclones got within six, but lost the heavyweight match by pin.
They lost the third place match 26-21 to Iowa, forfeiting matches at the 125,149 and 157 pound weight classes.
Penn State ended an up-and-down weekend with a 28-6 loss to Lehigh in the seventh place consolation match to finish eighth. After beginning the Duals with a 21-13 loss to Nebraska, the Nittany Lions came back with a victory over No. 12 ranked Hofstra, and a shocker over No. 11 Arizona State. The Nittany Lions needed a pin by fifth-year senior Dave Heckerd and a huge upset by heavyweight Bob Jones over No. 15 ranked heavyweight Kellan Fluckiger to advance past the Sun Devils. They lost their next match to Oklahoma 33-3, and were forced to play for seventh on Sunday.
"I was proud of our kids' response after the Nebraska loss," coach Troy Sunderland said. "We sat down after that loss, and I told them we need to wrestle better than that, and they came out and battled."
