The Penn State Board of Trustees elected a new chair and vice-chair on Friday at the Nittany Lion Inn, but not before a bit of competition.
Edward Hintz, president of the New York-based private money management firm Hintz, Holman and Hecksher Inc., was unopposed for the top position, but several trustees nominated both Joel Myers, who founded AccuWeather Inc., and Judge Cynthia Baldwin to vie for vice-chair.
"It's not unheard of, but it is unusual," said Penn State spokesman Bill Mahon of the contested post, which Baldwin ended up winning.
Baldwin was the first African-American female judge elected to the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas.
Both trustees accepted their victories with brief informal remarks.
After referring to the recent past chairs of the board, Hintz said, "How am I going to live up to this? . . . I'll need your help."
Later, Baldwin referred to his comment.
"I'll do everything I can to help, but realizing that Ed had an appendectomy on Saturday and was here on Wednesday, I'm pretty sure that he wears an 'S' on the T-shirt underneath . . . and he doesn't need a sidekick," she said.
