The Penn State women's indoor track team looks to continue its early season success this weekend in Kent, Ohio. The Nittany Lions will compete against Kent State, Maryland, Purdue and West Virginia in the Doug Raymond Invitational hosted by Kent State.
At 10 a.m. tomorrow, the team goes into Kent State Field House on the heels of their first place finish at its own U.S. Coaches Association Indoor Track Meet.
Like last week's meet, this Saturday's invitational is a team scored meet. It will be a more challenging test for the team said coach Beth Alford-Sullivan.
"It is going to be very competitive," Alford-Sullivan said. "They are all great programs."
Saturday will serve as the first away meet for the team this season. The chance to travel and compete against more competitive teams is something freshman Chloe Murdock says she and the team are looking forward to.
"We are more prepared for this meet," Murdock said. "We are excited to travel and to get more competition."
The team left its last trip to Kent Sate Field House with a number of impressive finishes.
The meet, which was held on Feb. 5 of last year, saw victories posted by Laila Brock and Jen Alyward. Toyin Augustus, Kathy Messner and Deshaya Williams took home second place honors.
"They have great competition at Kent State," Williams said.
This year's visit will allow Penn State to face Big Ten rival Purdue. Purdue's women's indoor track team finished fourth in the Big Ten and will help Penn State see where it stands in the conference. It also serves to push the team said Murdock, who will compete in the 800-meeter run Saturday.
"It motivates us to do better," Murdock said. "It allows us to see what we have and to see where we are at.
The team will start to find out where that is tomorrow morning.
