Column unfair to athletes who have heavy schedules

I may never learn to ice skate, but does anyone really care?

I was upset by the recent column "Perks for honors students, athletes unfair to others." From an athlete's standpoint, there were many false ideas presented in the column.

First, athletes do not flood ESACT classes. Athletes take an ESACT class to fill the rest of a requirement, and this class is usually taken during the off-season.

We are restricted from taking classes that may pose a risk for injury. While I may want to take ice skating, I will have to settle for bowling.

So please don't blame athletes and honors students for lack of room in a ballroom dancing class.

Another point that was made was that the only classes available to those who don't have priority registration were those at 8 a.m. on Mondays in the Keller Building.

Well, if you happen to schedule that class, I am in there with you.

Many athletes can't schedule afternoon classes because that time is blocked out for practice.

So, soccer players for example, have to pack two to four classes in before 2 p.m.

Do we want to hike up to Keller at 8 a.m.? No, but we have to schedule those classes with our priority registration because of practice.

In conclusion, athletes and honor students are getting blamed because a student who doesn't want to take 8 a.m. classes in Keller is worried that she won't graduate on time.

Priority scheduling allows for one less thing that athletes have to worry about during the day. With all the time that is taken up with practices, team meetings, weight training, etc., it is more of a relief to us than a burden to others.
