WEHR's on-air comments about gays offend student
For those who are not familiar with campus radio, WEHR operates out of Findlay Commons and is run by students. On Saturday night, two students were hosting a live call-in show from midnight until 2 a.m. This mildly entertaining show became rather distasteful when someone called in pretending to be gay. The hosts then surpassed the caller's ignorance with disdain that he could be gay. A few minutes later, an angry listener was heard on the air, claiming that he was gay. Whether or not he really was gay is unclear. However, one thing was quite clear: The caller was immediately met with an ignorant disbelief, subsequently shunned and made a laughingstock. Remarks were made that should not be used on public radio, no matter the context. For example, one of the hosts sarcastically said to the supposed gay man, "Yeah, it's OK to be gay. You should be hung by a rope and shot, but it's OK." Such a comment like this is inexcusable. I write this letter as a request that this show be censored properly. What happened Saturday night is a travesty committed against a campus that stands for diversity and open-mindedness. All faculty and students gay or straight should be appalled by such an occurrence. The comments are reminder that although our society is beginning to accept homosexuality, a silent hate still exists.
