'Miss Congeniality'

The newest Sandra Bullock flick, Miss Congeniality, is a series of dull, predictable clichés.

Sandra Bullock plays tomboy Gracie Hart, an FBI agent who goes undercover in a beauty pageant to catch a terrorist. As enjoyable as most people usually find Bullock, she is not at all convincing in this lightweight part. It is a stretch of the imagination to imagine her as a dateless social outcast — at worst she manages to look like the girl next door.

During the film, the budding romance between Benjamin Bratt and Bullock is fun but not entirely believable. The best performance of the movie is a small part played by Michael Caine, the beauty consultant hired for the doubtful challenge of turning Bullock into a believable beauty contestant. Caine focuses on Gracie's femininity while she tries to prevent a terrorist act. Candice Bergen also delivers an entertaining performance as the fanatical pageant director.

Overall, the movie is disappointingly lacking in surprises and originality. If you must see Miss Congeniality, it should be for the supporting cast.
