Letter to the Editor
Eminem has more redeeming qualities than writer mentions
I am writing this letter in response to both Tim Swift's editorial and the letter that said MTV should be more responsible. Tim Swift got a couple of facts wrong. "Kim" was not written about his then girlfriend. It was written about Eminem's wife. They decided not to file for divorce after all and they remain a couple. Swift also said that the first single was catchy. "The Real Slim Shady" is actually the fifth song on the album. The first song is the one with the lyrics he cited. If he was so uncomfortable, he should have turned it off then, not after "Kim," No. 16 of 18 tracks. Swift also fails to mention that by all accounts, Eminem is a wonderful father. He is also putting on a pay-per-view next month with all of the proceeds going to the Boys and Girls clubs of Detroit. As for MTV's role in all of this, they do not play Eminem videos with hateful lyrics. The only videos played on MTV are "The Real Slim Shady," "Stan" and "The Way I Am." It is my belief that MTV does not glorify Eminem in any way. They have never allowed Eminem to rap about killing anybody on the network. In fact, they had a roundtable discussion on hateful lyrics, complete with Eminem explaining that he doesn't hate anybody. Tim Swift cannot tell people what to like, and he cannot tell the Grammy people who to vote for. Since he did not hear "Criminal," the last song on the album, here are a couple of key lyrics: "Relax, guys, I like gay men ... Half the shit I say, I just make it up/to piss you off ..."
