Rowdiness ensues during recent power outage

Several transformers on electric poles in downtown State College blew out Monday night, causing rowdiness and panic among some residents.

A transformer on the 100 block of W. Fairmount Ave. blew out at about 8 p.m., the State College Police Department said. Other transformers on the 500 block of S. Allen St. and 700 block of Walnut Spring Lane also blew about 8:50 p.m. Police reported no connection between the incidents.

The blown transformers caused a power outage for several hours downtown. The loss of electricity prompted some residents on the 200 and 300 block of E. Beaver Avenue to go outside of their apartments and houses. Other residents, who remained inside the apartment buildings, threw items from balconies and windows. The police report did not indicate what types of items were thrown.

Police were called to the 200 block of S. Burrowes Street Monday, where residents were also reported to be throwing items from buildings there.

The outage also caused an employee at the Centre County Women's Resource Center, 118 W. Nittany Ave., to activate a panic alarm.
