Poor shooting dooms Lady Lions

Collegian Staff Writer

Last night, the Penn State women's basketball team threw up enough bricks to put an addition on Michigan's Crisler Arena.

The No. 13 Lady Lions (11-5, 3-2 Big Ten) shot just 33 percent from the field, converting on just 22 of their 66 shots in their 71-62 loss to the Wolverines.

Lions senior Lisa Shepherd led the team with 20 points and freshman Kelly Mazzante added 17. However no other Lions player scored more than nine points or shot better than 50 percent.

The Lions point guard combo of Katrena Carr and Ashley Luke was a combined 1-14 for three points. Luke took all six of her shots from three-point range but converted on one while Carr went 0-8 from the floor and failed to score.

Outside shots also killed the Lions, as they were just 6-21 from behind the 3-point stripe.

"You've got to get in the gym and shot if your going to be a shooter," Penn State women's basketball coach Rene Portland told WRSC radio.

Michigan's shooting proved to be the difference in the game as the Wolverines made good on 51 percent of their shots, nailing six more buckets than the Lions in 11 less attempts, and tried just three three-pointers.

"I gave everyone the green light to shoot," Michigan women's basketball coach Sue Guevara said. "And tonight, even if one person didn't make it, we had someone else right there to make it."

The Lions shot just 30 percent in the first half but trailed by only nine. However, the Wolverines converted on 57 percent of their second half shots to prevent the Lions from gaining momentum and making a charge.

In their previous two games, both losses, the Lions have shot just 40 percent from the field, five percentage points below their season average, and 26 percent from three-point range, 13 percentage points below their Big Ten leading 39-percent average.

The Lions try to snap their two-game losing streak at 2 p.m. Sunday when they host Indiana in The Bryce Jordan Center.
