Letter to the Editor
Ashcroft's history reflects several troubling positions

I am sick and tired of conservatives who trash Democrats because we just want to find out the truth.

The letters written by Keith Bloomquist and Daniel J. Kelly illustrate how much conservatives hate to admit they are wrong. If they want to know the name of the white supremacist magazine, all they need to do is look.

To make things easier, I will put the facts down here: John Ashcroft gave an interview to the magazine Southern Partisan. They called him a "natural" for the pages of the magazine. This magazine once called KKK leader David Duke "a populist spokesperson for a recapturing of the American ideal."

His offensive comments included praising the magazine for setting the record straight on "patriots," such as Jefferson Davis and Stonewall Jackson. I can see how some may find that offensive.

On abortion, everybody knows that Ashcroft cannot rewrite the law. His job is to uphold it, but is he prepared to uphold a woman's right to choose? Will he punish the terrorists who bomb abortion clinics to the full extent of the law? That is the issue here.

The case of Ronnie White being pro-criminal is curious, especially when you consider that he had a higher percentage of upholding the death penalty than any other Ashcroft appointee. He has repeatedly struck down laws meant to stop gays from being discriminated against, and he voted against a gay Clinton-appointed ambassador for no real reason other than the fact that the man was gay.

Finally, Ashcroft accepted an honorary degree from Bob Jones University.
