Penn State's Materials Research Laboratory received an $800,000 grant towards a new lab.
The W. M. Keck Foundation made the donation, which will help forward the research and development of "smart" materials.
The design of these materials allows them to both sense changes and react to them. The materials are so complex that they can not be brought into the university's current laboratory clean rooms.
The new lab, set to be located in current MRL facilities, will provide students and faculty with the opportunity to work with the "smart" technology.
The name of the lab will be the W. M. Keck Smart Materials Integration Laboratory.
