Residents evacuate building when apartment catches fire

Collegian Staff Writer

A small kitchen fire in an apartment drew police and firefighters to the 600 block of West College Avenue yesterday afternoon.

State College Police Department and Alpha Fire Company responded to a 911 call at about 4:30 p.m.

"It was a grease fire on a stove and contained in the kitchen," Alpha Fire Chief Tracy Dietrich said. There were no reported injuries, he added.

The fire started when a resident started to boil oil for dinner and left it unattended. "My goal was to get out after calling 911," said the resident. Barefoot and without a jacket, the resident was lent shoes and a coat by neighbors.

The building, owned by the Apartment Store, was not equipped with sprinklers.

Residents left the building after they smelled smoke and realized it was not a false alarm.

Jacob Stipe (senior-administration justice) lives three doors away from the site of the fire. Stipe said he thought it was another false alarm and did not leave until he smelled smoke. Then, his reaction was to get out as quickly as possible, he said.

College Avenue was temporarily closed, and traffic was diverted to Barnard Street.
