[Tuesday,
Jan. 9, 2001 ] Today's
University Park forecast
After a few snow flurries on a northwesterly
wind today, high pressure will control the weather
pattern over the Commonwealth for the rest of the week.
As the high passes to the south, westerly breezes will
bring warm air from the Great Plains to the northeastern
United States. The next storm system to affect central
Pennsylvania will bring overcast skies for the weekend.

Weather
Highlight
A series of unusually brutal winters
and nearly rainless, locust-plagued summers that started
in 1999 continues to imperil the nomadic herders of the
Mongolian steppe. Last winter, nearly 15% of the
Mongolian livestock herd perished. This winter, already
the worst in 50 years, deep snows covered what little
pasture existed, forcing many families to wander through
the drifting snow in search of food. The past week
brought two feet of fresh snow and temperatures well
under -40 °F--cold by even Mongolian standards.
