Letter to the Editor
YAF's objection to festival based on funding issues
I suppose I should have expected it; however, I was still shocked at what I read in Monday's Collegian. Brandon Forsht and Lindsay Keipper both wrote articles admonishing YAF for "squelching free speech." I don't fault these people for their misinformed opinions, because their only source of information was last semester's Collegian editorial. However, both letters are grotesquely in error. YAF's concern surrounding Cuntfest is not a free speech issue. It has always been and always will be a funding issue. Never in YAF's crusade over the matter have we questioned anyone's right to voice their opinion. We do however challenge your "right" to have a forum provided to you, funded in full. This event got double the amount of money other campus events get, attracted few people, and provided little, if any, intellectual value to campus. As a student, I can't imagine you have an endless pot of money to just throw around. The funding for this event was at your expense. Ask yourself: Did this event benefit you at all? Is your life better after they held this near-$10,000 event? This event did not benefit students. Yet, this is exactly the type of event, which is repeatedly held and funded at your expense. I would like for any person to find when YAF questioned someone's right to voice their opinion. Again, this issue is not about free speech. I only ask that you make opinions about subjects using unbiased, objective data. Judging from this event, you can cross out the Collegian as one of your sources.
