Educated people should not squelch free speech

Shame on both Jeff Budney and state Rep. John Lawless. Educated people, particularly elected officials, should know better than to try to squelch free speech because it personally offends them.

Obvioulsy, Mr. Budney, you neither attended this even nor bothered to research its background.

Cuntfest's title came from a book whose author was speaker at the event, which was not named Cuntfest in an attempt to be obscene or inflammatory. The event was so named in order to reinforce Muscio's assertion that women need to reclaim the word and render it inoffensive.

Did Penn State shoulder any of the expenses when Young Americans for Freedom invited Phyllis Schlafly or John Lott to our campus?

Is the support of ultra-conservative speakers really an effective and fair use of university and state funds?

I'm not actually suggesting that stop YAF from sponsoring speakers in the future.

I'm merely suggesting that Mr. Budney, as chairman of an organization that has often sponsored controversial speakers, ought to have a little more respect for freedom of speech.

Cuntfest was an educational experience sponsored by groups that are trying to encourage better attitudes toward women and reclaim sexist insults such as cunt. The fact that Budney and Lawless would attempt to suppress these groups' free speech just goes to show how selfish they are and how far women still have to go.
