'Space age' store beams into town
The Black Hole offers photo developing and electronic gadgets.

Where students once found edible goodies such as ice cream and milkshakes, they will now find something to satisfy their digital appetites.

The Black Hole, a photo developing and electronic accessories store, opened Saturday. It replaced Dairy Queen at 358 E. College Ave.

The store offers one-hour photo developing, photo enlargements and digital camera services. It also services the overnight processing of film for several State College stores, including McLanahan's Student Store, 414 E. College Ave.

"We decided to open a store here because there was a need for a one-hour photo developing service in the downtown area," said Susan Rohrbaugh, store manager. "We're in walking distance of the students and our prices are reasonable, unlike big chain stores."

Black Hole offers more than just photo developing. The store also sells AT&T cellular phones and phone, computer and television accessories. Its merchandise includes CD-R disks, cable wires and telephone cords.

The store focuses mainly on the needs of students and will be doing promotions around those needs, Rohrbaugh said.

The Black Hole is currently offering discounts on telephones with activation service and two sets of four-inch photo prints for the price of one. It is also planning to have discounted developing rates for when students return from spring break.

Edgardo Nieves (senior-rehabilitation services) said his friend bought a cell phone from the store Saturday and said he felt he received a good deal. "He got a really nice phone for $12 with the rebates," Nieves said.

When asked the story behind the name for the store, Rohrbaugh responded with a laugh.

"We wanted to go with a space age name because of the things we carry and show how we're not just a photo developing store," he said. "We decided to go with the Black Hole because nobody knows what we are and that's what the black hole is."
