Letter to the Editor
Unfair attention is given to recent event on campus
I was reading the paper yesterday and came across the article that mentioned Jeff Budney's letter to Rep. John Lawless and I was appalled. The fact that he was upset about this event is not what upsets me. After all, he is entitled to his opinion as much as anyone else. It is the fact that both he and Lawless seem to forget that the student money that are used to fund events such as this are there for everyone to share. His belief that this event was meant to be partisan first and not educational is completely erroneous. Not only that, but the statement that this was an "inappropriate expenditure" is absolutely hypocritical. I don't recall either of these gentlemen speaking out against partisan viewpoints being funded by the university when Charlton Heston was brought here as part of the Distinguished Speaker Series, a program which is also funded through tax dollars. I don't recall any outcry over the use of tax dollars when the Young Americans for Freedom used university facilities to house the events that included some very partisan and controversial speakers. As I said, I don't want to prevent Jeff Budney. All I ask is that he stand up for freedom that he believes in and allow other people to express their opinions as well.
