The recent actions of Jeffrey Budney in contacting a state legislator about the funding of Cuntfest is cowardly, illogical, and dangerous. His actions, if they proceed, will invite the state to become the primary arbitrator of taste, presentation, speech and thought in our university. This presents a grave threat to the fostering of diverse viewpoints through the university marketplace of ideas, and would most likely lead to increased scrutiny and censorship of student events.
The state has no role in dictating what college-aged students can say, hear, see, or listen to, especially if such events are funded by student dollars (like Cuntfest). The state's current policy of threatening to withhold funds when issues like these come up is disgusting and backhanded, and shows the current narrow-mindedness of certain legislators and public officials.
The best way to fight speech you disagree with is with more speech, not by asking the state to dictate what our marketplace can and cannot present to rational adults.
