Physical play, aggressive offense key in Ice Lions' victory over Marist

Collegian Staff Writer

The Penn State Ice Lions defeated the Marist College Red Foxes 5-3 at the Greenberg Sports Complex Saturday night.

"We took more shots, and we were more physical tonight," said Ice Lion forward Ralph Stoehr. "We are disappointed with the way our season started and now we have to keep winning."

Ice Lions team captain Jake Wolfe's three goals gave him a hat trick for the third time this season, and Stoehr rounded out the offensive effort with two scores. The Ice Lions' defense was highlighted by the solid play of goal keeper David Levine, who made 27 saves in the game.

The Ice Lions (5-7-2) scored when Wolfe intercepted a Marist pass and swept the puck past the Red Fox goaltender for a 1-0 lead.

The Ice Lions kept the momentum in the second period. Stoehr scored off an assist from forward Ben Goodman to give Penn State a 2-0 lead.

Just after Penn State killed Marist's second power play, it scored its third goal of the night. Ice Lion defenseman Jason Mals passed to left wingman J.T. D'Alessandro, who passed to a wide-open Wolfe for the score.

Marist's frustration led to a brief scuffle along the boards, and two players from each team spent time in the penalty box. Marist scored after the confusion when center Braeghan Plambeck found some space in the high left corner of the net, and the Ice Lion lead was cut to 3-1.

Late in the period, Stoehr was successful when he scored off an assist from for-

ward Ben Casole to give the Ice Lions a 4-1 lead.

"By being more physical tonight, we created a lot of additional opportunities," said Ice Lions head coach Mo Stroemel, "and it really opened up the ice for us"

The Red Foxes scored on the power play early in the final period when Right Wingman Todd Hutton slapped the puck into

net from the outside for Marist's second goal.

Marist crept back into the game a few minutes later when Plambeck scored again to shave the deficit to one goal.

The Ice Lions silenced the Red Fox rally late in the period when Wolfe blasted the puck into the net off assists from Stoehr and D'Alessandro. "Tonight, we played a complete game," Mals said.

"We did have some trouble getting the puck out to the points, but we play better when we put a lot of pressure on the opposition like we did tonight."

Penn State continues its homestand when it hosts Montclair State at 10:10 p.m. Saturday in the Ice Pavilion.

"We have the hardest schedule in the league," Wolfe said, "and we have to keep winning."
