For having seven days rest, the Penn State women's basketball team did not appear very rested.
The No. 11 Lady Lions (3-3) were outhustled and outplayed last night in Gainesville, Fla., as they fell to Florida 92-79.
While the Lions struggled to find the basket shooting just 33 percent, the Gators (6-0) shot the lights out of the O'Connell Center, shooting 50 percent from the field.
The Gators were beating the Lions to loose balls and key rebounds throughout the game.
The Lions, however, actually won the battle on the boards 48-43. They also forced Penn State into double-digit turnovers.
"This was a good win for the Gators against a great team," Florida women's basketball coach Carol Ross said in a press release. "Defensively, we stayed aggressive which set the tone for us. Offensively, we established the tempo with our running game."
Lions senior Lisa Shepherd paced the Lions with 25 points and freshman Kelly Mazzante chipped in 16. Also, Lions freshman Courtney Upshaw added a double-double with 10 points and 12 boards.
"I'm really pleased with her," Penn State women's basketball coach Rene Portland told radio station WRSC. "I hope her attitude will get contagious.
"I'm happy with all three freshmen. They're doing what we ask of them."
But it was the Gators backcourt that stole the show, with Brandi McCain and Tombi Bell combining for 52 points.
The game started back and forth, but then the Gators jumped out to a 14-point lead. The Lions responded and cut the lead to one. However, the Gators poured it on and didn't look back. They took a seven-point lead into halftime and continued a 19-5 run in the second half.
"It all goes back to the first five minutes of the game when we got down 10," Portland said. "We played even with them after that."
Florida opened as much as a 17-point lead in the second half, but Penn State chipped the lead away and refused to let the Gators run away with the game. However, the Lions were unable to grab any of the momentum and could not get baskets to fall when they needed them.
With the win, the Gators were able to avenge last year's 91-67 loss to the Lions at The Bryce Jordan Center.
"The team worked very hard to prepare for this game tonight," Ross said. "For those of us who suffered through last year's game, we had a little more incentive during practice and it paid off."
