Letter to the Editor
Media misunderstood the Faculty Senate's policies

Under the old adage "never let the truth stand in the way of a good story," the Collegian and other media have had a jolly good time lampooning the University Faculty Senate for passing a resolution against booing at Penn State sporting events.

The problem is the story is not true. Neither the Senate nor any other Penn State entity took any such action. Nor has the university proposed, as other media reported, arresting or revoking the season tickets of those who boo at games.

What the Senate actually did does not make for such juicy copy. For many years, announcers at Penn State sporting events have invited spectators to give the visiting team a cordial welcome upon entering the stadium or other venues. Last month, the Senate agreed to a request to add its name to those announcements. Nothing more.

Despite considerable local and national reporting to the contrary, there is no new, changed, or even old Penn State policy regarding booing.
