The eldest daughter of Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore will make a campaign stop in Happy Valley this afternoon.

Karenna Gore Schiff, 27, is scheduled to speak with students at 4 p.m. today in the HUB-Robeson Center's Alumni Hall.

Schiff's visit comes days after Republican vice presidential candidate Dick Cheney made a stumping stop in State College. Cheney spoke to a packed house Thursday night in the Agricultural Arena.

Schiff, a recent graduate of Columbia Law School, is the national chair of GoreNet, an organization of young voters working to elect Gore and raise voter turnout among young people.

The College Democrats organized Schiff's visit. College Democrats Vice President Alison Altman said the group has been trying to coordinate a visit from someone with the Gore campaign for a long time. Schiff was originally supposed to stop in State College about a month ago, but when the plans did not work out, she visited University of Pennsylvania instead, Altman said.

Schiff's visit comes at a pivotal time, just one day before Gore will face off with Republican presidential candidate and Texas Gov. George W. Bush in tomorrow's election. "Pennsylvania is a really close state right now," Altman said.

Schiff was originally scheduled to speak in Osmond Lab, but the Democrats moved the event yesterday to accommodate more people. The event will not be ticketed, but there will be a guest list. Interested spectators can sign up for the guest list at the Democratic headquarters, 112 Hetzel St.

Penn State College Republicans are not planning a counter rally in response to Schiff's visit, Vice Chairman Brendan Holloway said. "We're going to try to keep things positive here," Holloway said.

Holloway said his group supports Schiff's work to reach young voters.

"I think mainly Karenna Gore is out there to get people out to vote," Holloway said. "We're all for that."

Last week during Cheney's visit, about 50 College Democrats and other demonstrators protested across the street from the Agricultural Arena. Protestors also caused disturbances inside the arena as the vice presidential candidate was speaking. Several demonstrators complained that they were thrown out of the rally for bringing in Gore signs.

However, College Democrats secretary Jared Cram said yesterday that the Democrats will use the same sign policy today that the Republicans used Thursday night.

No outside signs will be allowed into the venue, and the Democrats will have signs available for spectators at the door, Cram said.

Holloway said he believed Cheney's rally went well in spite of the protestors, adding that the College Republicans want to keep the final hours before Election Day concentrating on voter drives, not anti-Gore rallies.

"We just want to change the tone," he said.
