The Penn State women's tennis team concludes the fall portion of its schedule this weekend as four of its members compete at the ITA Indoor Regional Qualifier in Williamsburg, Va.
Senior Pilar Montgomery, juniors Janelle Perez and Rebecca Ho and sophomore Judy Wang left for the campus of William and Mary yesterday for the event, which begins tomorrow morning.
It will be the final action off the fall season for the Nittany Lions.
"It's important to us to do well for that reason," Wang said. "We may say that we play each tournament the same, but I think we may be a little more into it because of it being the last one in a while.
"We want to go and play good tennis, do the best we can."
In contrast to many of the other fall tournaments, with their flights and draws and consolations and any number of other goofy formats, the ITA Regional Qualifiers are simple: one big single elimination tournament.
"It's a large draw," Montgomery said. "There's a little bit of pressure. You have to keep playing well, keep winning."
In addition to the singles competition, all four players will participate in the doubles draw as well, with Montgomery teaming with Ho and Wang paired with Perez.
The duo of Montgomery-Ho has been together as the number one doubles team for most of this year, with both players adjusting to their new partners quite nicely.
"We are really starting to get to know each others' games," Ho said. "We get more confidence every time out together."
While Ho and Montgomery have been a team the entire season, head coach Buffy Baker has mixed and matched the other pairings.
Although Wang and Perez did begin the season as partners, for a while they were split up and playing doubles separately.
Wang is happy they are back together as a team.
"I feel real comfortable with Janelle," she said. "We push each other to do our best."
Perez can also draw on her past experience at the Regional Qualifiers.
But her experience pales in comparison to Ho and Montgomery. Both have attended the ITA since their freshman years.
"It definitely helps that I've been here before," Ho said. " I know what to expect, and I have experience."
Montgomery will play in her fourth-- and final-- ITA Regional.
"I want to make the finals this year," Montgomery, who has made it as far as the semis before, said. "This is the last time I will play at Regionals. It's also probably my last trip to William and Mary. There are a lot of those this year."
Montgomery looks at each of her matches this season with a nostalgic eye, knowing that her career, which began five years ago, is soon coming to a close.
"Buffy tells me not to look at things that way. She thinks I put too much pressure on myself."
The event features the top players from the Eastern schools.
"It will be tough," Montgomery said. "There are a lot of talented players. The East Regional is tough every year. You can count on it."
