Although it may not be many students' top priority, I hope Penn Staters take Social Security into account when and if they cast their votes on Tuesday. Gov. George W. Bush has made a promise to young people he cannot keep. He claims he will keep Social Security benefits for current recipients intact while giving younger people the right to invest some of their benefits. Actually, Bush has proposed the same $1 trillion to current recipients and younger workers for investment. Bush will be faced with either cutting benefits up to 54 percent or bankrupting Social Security by 2023.
Al Gore has a much more sound policy of encouraging people to save money for retirement not risk it. He would create choices for younger workers within the program while keeping Social Security money off limits to government spending sprees. I feel we have a very important choice between two very different candidates on this issue and others. I am tired of politicians making promises they know they can't keep. Please keep the security of our generation in mind when pulling the lever in the voting booth on Tuesday.
