I was outraged to see the huge ad in the Collegian on Wednesday stating that Catholics are pro-choice and that "Catholics believe in legal abortion," among other troubling statements. I would love to know who they polled and where these people are, because I'm Catholic, and I've never met another Catholic who thought it was OK to kill another living being. Frankly, I can't see how anyone could think that it's a woman's choice to kill.
For all the feminists out there who think it's a woman's inherent right to choose abortion, just listen to a quote by Elizabeth Cady Stanton, one of our founding foremothers of feminism: "When we consider that women are treated as property, it is degrading to women that we should treat our children as property to be disposed of as we see fit." She and Susan B. Anthony, along with other founders of the feminist movement, were all against abortions, and not because they were illegal and dangerous practices back then, but because it was killing. They knew it and recognized it, so why can't women today recognize it in the core feminist principles of justice, nonviolence, and nondiscrimination. I'm not slamming feminists.
I am a feminist, and I'm also pro-life, just as Elizabeth Cady Stanton was, and just as Susan B. Anthony was. I'm asking that everyone look deeply into what you stand for and to try to decide if that's truly what you believe if you truly believe that it's okay to kill children or if you truly believe that women really have the choice to kill. I certainly do not believe that I have the choice to kill, so why do so many other women?
