The No. 7 Lady Lion field hockey team got off to a slow start, but picked up the intensity and came away with a 3-0 win over Pennsylvania last night at Franklin Field. Seniors Traci Anselmo and Maegan Galie accounted for all of the action as each was involved in all three of Penn State's tallies.
Penn State (14-4) started off sluggish, taking a 1-0 lead into the halftime on nine first-half shots. Galie scored the unassisted goal for the Lions to break the scoreless tie with 19:41 left in the period. The outstanding play of Penn's goalkeeper Katie Davis kept the PSU off the board the rest of the period as she made five saves and 12 for the game.
Tacking on two goals early in the second period, Penn State came out of the break with increased intensity. Anselmo scored her first goal of the game seven minutes into the period on a scramble after a penalty corner with Galie assisting on the play. Then Anslemo extended the lead to 3-0 on an unassisted shot with less than 19 minutes remaining in the game.
The Lions controlled the game, dominating defensively and creating offensive opportunities, but were not able to take advantage of them.
The defensive effort by the Lions, however, helped to preserve the 3-0 victory.
Penn (3-11) was limited to just four shots for the game, while the Lions attempted 18.
Penn State will close the regular season with its final Big Ten game at Ohio State on Saturday, October 28.
The game is slated for 1 p.m.
