Highlight
On this day in 1948, a temperature inversion developed
in the Monogahela River valley and lasted nearly a week.
In Donora, Pennsylvania, a yellow smog thickened until
visibility dropped to a few inches. Two United States
Steel Corporation plants continuously spewed smoke and
other pollutants into the air. This severely sickened
more than half the population of the community, and
caused twenty deaths--the first in this country
officially attributed to air pollution. This tragedy
provided the impetus for Congress to pass the Clean Air
Acts of 1963 and 1970.
Fall
Foliage
Fall foliage has
reached its peak in north-central parts of the
Commonwealth and will be reaching its peak just about
everywhere else in Pennsylvania this coming week.
