Fliers appropriately cited problems in Middle East
I thank the Collegian for suggesting other avenues of expression to the students that distributed the fliers on the recent Middle East situation in its editorial on Oct. 19, but to misrepresent their content as controversial is misleading. The fliers contained pictures of 7 victims out of the more than 1,500 Palestinian civilians who were wounded or killed by Israeli soldiers. These images were broadcast to the world. Are you suggesting they weren't credible? The fliers contained identified quotes from the United Nations' Declaration of Human Rights, CNN, statements from action groups, the U.N. Security Council, and well-known facts surrounding the killing of 12 year old Mohamed Al Dura. The U.N. Security Council's condemnation of Israel's use of excessive force against Palestinian civilians is not controversial. Is the Collegian unaware of this? There was one statement by Arab-American Leaders that didn't have a name attached to it. That may have been a lapse, but all other information was clearly identified and verifiable. The Collegian reported that the MSA acknowledged its member's activism and the Council of Churches contact person did not discourage people from spreading their reports. Don't shoot the messenger to avoid the message. If the Collegian had made it clear that those Palestinians shot and killed were on Palestinian-occupied territory (UN Security Council resolution 242, which is incidentally, supported by the U.S.), and that there are over 3 million refugees refused the right of return, then maybe the students would not have taken it on themselves to impart the information.
