After lengthy debate yesterday, the University Faculty Senate passed a resolution that tries to hush the booing at the Penn State football games.
In a vote of 124-59, by a show of hands, faculty approved a resolution attaching the Faculty Senate name to an announcement made before selected sporting events. In endorsing the announcement, the senate is trying to encourage positive cheering instead of boos, taunts and profanities.
Of the 14 people who spoke on the issue, most opposed it.
Opponents of the measure said, among other things, that it would be pointless to add another voice of authority to the announcement the athletic department already makes at the games.
But David Christy, chair of the Senate Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics, said the measure shows the faculty support civility at public gatherings.
"The name of the Faculty Senate might indicate that this is more than a general announcement," Christy said.
