Lions try to get back on track

Collegian Staff Writer

At times, the Penn State women's volleyball team has looked like the team of old—the team to which wins came easily.

Then there are other times it struggles to place itself in position to win.

Tonight it will be anyone's guess which team shows up when the Nittany Lions travel to Ohio State at 7:30 p.m.

Despite a win against Indiana on Wednesday night, the Lions struggled against the Hoosiers.

"I just don't think we played very well," Penn State head coach Russ Rose said after Wednesday night's victory against Indiana. "I'm tired of seeing the same things in games as I do in practice."

Although the Lions are riding a six-match winning streak out to Columbus, the matches they have won have shown two sides to Penn State.

On one side stands a team that is able to contend for the Big Ten title. That team has poise and leadership and is able to put away its opposition, as it did when it defeated Purdue and Illinois this past weekend.

However, on the other side stands a team with a lack of chemistry, a team in which the players on the floor struggle to communicate with one another and are unable to be on the same page with each other as they showed in Wednesday's victory.

"I think we're struggling at times, but I think everyone is working hard and I think you have to keep going at it," Penn State outside hitter Katie Schumacher said. "With the lineup we have out there you have to keep going hard with every point."

While the lineup has been far from consistent, Rose has spent all season attempting to find the right mix of players out there to carry this team. It will be anyone's guess who will start when the Lions take the floor tonight against the Buckeyes.

Though the core players are expected to start such Amanda Rome, Mishka Levy and Schumacher. Players like setter Jessica Hayden, and middle hitters like Robyn Guokas and Cara Smith have been in and out of the starting lineup throughout much of the season.

Though Smith has been solid in previous matches, she was left out of Wednesday's match against Indiana.

"I'm not sure who is going to start," Rose said.

Regardless of who starts tonight's match, the task at hand will be far from easy for the Lions.

The No.11 Buckeyes (17-1, 7-1 Big Ten) have a trio of threats on offense that include Dana Stearns, Anne Botica and Shelly Draeger. The three combined are averaging a little more than nine kills per game. Botica also plays solid defense and leads the team with 170 digs.

After Wednesday night's win against Indiana, there is concern with this Penn State team long before it takes the floor.

"Obviously, we don't match up with the top teams in the conference," Rose said. "Because they do the things we used to."
