Penn State coaching legend Holmes Cathrall, Jr., died on Tuesday at his home in Centre Hill. Cathrall is the all-time leader in coaching victories for the Penn State men's tennis team and was the head coach of the Nittany Lions for 25 years.
Cathrall posted a cumulative coaching record of 280-197-2 while coaching the Lions. He was also an assistant coach for four years in the 1960s. Current Nittany Lions coach Jan Bortner was the coach that succeeded Cathrall.
A 1947 graduate of Colgate University, he lettered at CU in basketball, tennis and track and field four times each. Cathrall was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, having served during World War II as a captain, earning a Purple Heart. In addition to his coaching duties at Penn State, Cathrall was a health and physical education instructor for many years.
Memorial services are being held at Eisenhower Chapel on the campus of Penn State. The services will begin at 10:30 a.m. today. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Holmes Cathrall Men's Tennis Scholarship Fund, in care of the Penn State Development Office, 1 Old Main Building, University Park, Pa. 18602.
