New markers will guide students in Lot 83, 44

Collegian Staff Writer

Students who find themselves wandering among the many endless rows in campus parking lots, trying to remember where they parked their cars, may have an easier time getting where they want to go in the near future.

The university has been working on placing aisle markers in the Lot 83 North, and eventually in Lot 44, the off-campus storage lot.

If the response from students is positive, the markers may appear in other parking lots throughout the campus as well.

"It will make it easier for students to park, especially when it comes to finding your car," said Jean Harris, university parking office manager.

The aisles will have 18 to 24 inch numbers painted on the pavement, and section identifiers will be hung on the light poles that go east to west in Lot 83 North, the large parking area near the flower gardens. Each pole will be designated with both a letter and number.

The letters will start from the south at "A" and from east at "1," and should be in place before the first snows fall, if all goes well, said Transportation Facilities Coordinator Doug Holmes.

The plans came after the project was mentioned as an Undergraduate Student Government issue in last spring's USG elections.

"It's one of those things where you say something, and it happens," said USG President Matt Roan.

Roan said it was a suggestion that he had made to university officials earlier in the semester, but he didn't get an update on the progress of the plan until recently.

"I didn't hear from them for a little while, but the response that I got seemed to hint that it was something they'd been working on," he said. "They thought it was a good idea."

Holmes said the aisles in Lot 83 North had been marked in the past before, but time and maintenance had eliminated the markings.

"It was a good idea and it was done before, and over time just got worn away," he said.

Some students agreed that the addition of markers would make parking easier.

Katie O'Brien (junior-labor and industrial relations) said that while she rarely had trouble finding her car in lot 83 North, markers will come in handy when she lends it to a friend.

"A lot of times they don't know where the car is and have a lot of trouble," she said. "Markers would be really helpful."

If the project gets good feedback from students, other large parking lots throughout campus may get similar markers — though Lot 80, another parking lot near East Halls, won't be marked because it is scheduled to be reconfigured in future campus construction projects.

The money for the markers will come from the parking budget, which comes from the sale of student, faculty and visitor parking passes, as well as faculty and visitor parking tickets.

Money from student parking tickets doesn't go to the parking office but is used instead for endowments and scholarships.
