This match is a warm-up for what awaits the Penn State women's volleyball team on Friday.
After apparently finding its way back to the traditional style of volleyball that has made Penn State so successful during the past few years, the Nittany Lions will take on the Indiana Hoosiers at 7:30 tonight in Rec Hall before facing one of the Big Ten's best teams, Ohio State, on Friday.
The Lions ride a five-match win streak into tonight's matchup against the Hoosiers and have found the formula for success in several areas on the floor, especially on the blocking front.
The Lions, behind sophomore middle hitter Robyn Guokas, are averaging a little more than 10 blocks per contest over the last five matches.
Guokas, who posted a career-high 15 blocks against Michigan two weeks ago helped shutdown Purdue and Illinois this past weekend.
Though tonight's matchup might be considered a warm-up before Friday's encounter with Ohio State (17-1, 7-1 Big Ten), Penn State is not looking past anyone.
"We just take one game at a time," Guokas said "We probably won't even begin to watch over tape or review for Ohio State until the day before the match."
As successful as Guokas has been on the defense, a trio of Penn State players have lifted the offense back to respectability. Mishka Levy, Cara Smith and Katie Schumacher are all contributing to the Lions offensive attack. And it shows, as Schumach-er was recently named this week's co-Big Ten Player of the Week after averaging a little more than three kills per game last weekend.
"I think we're playing better, I mean, we're not playing great, but we're playing better than we have been," Penn State head coach Russ Rose said.
While Penn State continues to climb up the Big Ten ladder, Indiana has had its fair share of struggles up until last weekend when it defeated Purdue in three games.
Overall, the Hoosiers (12-6, 3-5 Big Ten) have found a few bright spots from Amanda Welter and Melissa Brewer, who have carried them so far this season.
In Saturday's win against Purdue, Welter recorded her 1,000th kill and shares the other half of the co-Big Ten Player-of-the-Week honor with Penn State's Schumacher.
Despite going into tonight's matchup against Indiana head on, the Lions are fully aware of what lies in the wings for Friday.
"We need to take care of Indiana," Rose said.
