I am writing in response to the recent decision to include the Hooters franchise in the State College community.
Elena Caracappa reports that "Hooters claims the insinuation that it exploits attractive women [is] as ridiculous as saying the NFL exploits men who are big and fast . . ." Therefore Hooters acknowledges that it employs a group of "elite" women, women who have a certain worth assigned to them because of physical attributes.
It is hardly disputable what Hooters sells with these women: their bodies. But beyond the idea of female degradation, I feel Hooters degrades men too. Hooters stands as a reminder that as human beings, all of us, whether female or male, inherit from society a specific sex role.
I am further convinced that Hooters will exacerbate the already sexist atmosphere of late night State College. Many women detest the plethora of comments and catcalls they receive when walking on College or Beaver Avenue on any weekend night. Hooters will only instigate its patronage to bring attitudes and actions acceptable within the restaurant into the streets of State College where they are unacceptable.
It is extremely discouraging that American culture encourages negative atmospheres like Hooters -- though this doesn't mean sexuality cannot be used in a positive and creative way. Instead of placing worth on the individual and his or her intellect, tangible talents, and emotions, this society places more worth on physical appearance. Hooters incisively demonstrates this.
I encourage those who are planning on boycotting Hooters to seriously consider boycotting Pennsylvania Pizza and its affiliates who will manage the coming Hooters establishment.
