USG receives a poor grade in fulfilling campaign goals

Now eight weeks into the school year, the Undergraduate Student Government's mid-semester report card is a disappointment. Halfway through the fall semester, many members of USG and its leaders' campaign platform projects remain incomplete.

President Matt Roan, Vice-president Kelly O'Brien and the rest of USG need to stop talking and start fulfilling the promises they made while campaigning.

  • eLion Hours Expanded — USG's biggest accomplishment this semester has been expanding the operating hours for eLion. Grade: A

Although the new 7:30 a.m. to 3 a.m. hours are not the 24-hour access USG originally hoped for, the extended operation is a good compromise that benefits students who were inconvenienced by the former 11 p.m. shutdown.

  • Lower Usage Fees for the HUB-Robeson Center — Usage fees for the HUB-Robeson Center were lowered this year. But the lower rates for students and student organizations were made possible by a 6.23 percent raise in student tuition, not USG legislation.

The goal was attained, but, unfortunately, USG cannot take the credit. Grade: N/A

  • Voter Registration — Members of USG participated in several voter registration drives, including the Youth Vote 2000 drive during "Raw is War" at The Bryce Jordan Center on Sept. 25. While these drives were adequate, USG didn't go the extra step to earn an A. Grade: B

Many students remain unregistered and uninformed, and more canvassing, advertising and drives could have been done to better inform the large numbers of students who let apathy get the best of them.

  • Parking lot aisle markers — In April, Roan and O'Brien said they hoped to have aisle markers painted in Lots 80, 83 and 83 North during the summer. However, the temperature is dropping, the leaves are starting to change color and students are still roaming the lots in search of their cars because there aren't many numbered spots to be found. Grade: Incomplete

  • Expand women's health treatment — One of Roan and O'Brien's biggest platform issues was adding a new satellite clinic targeted at women's health issues. After meeting with University Health Services officials, the student leaders realized the clinic was unfeasible and amended their plans. Instead, they hoped to expand the Ritenour Building to better meet women's health needs.

But, this project, too, seems to have, at least temporarily, fallen by the wayside. Grade: Incomplete

As a student voice to the Penn State administration and State College community, USG has the power to make positive differences that will affect students across campus. It just needs to start using that voice.

The semester may be halfway over, but USG still has time to improve its report card.
