Authorities continue to inspect rock case

Collegian Staff Writer

A third person may be charged this week in connection with rock-throwing at Shulze Hall on Sept. 29, according to a Centre County assistant district attorney.

The charges stem from an incident in which three black students told police that two white men threw rocks from the roof of the eight-story dorm. The victims told police the rocks might have been targeted at them because of their race.

Last week, police charged two men, Evan J. Gugliuzza, 18, and William P. Loftus, 19, with recklessly endangering another person, criminal trespass and disorderly conduct. Both are listed as students in the Penn State directory.

Gugliuzza and Loftus were scheduled to have their preliminary hearing yesterday morning in Bellefonte, but the hearing was postponed until next week so additional charges could be filed.

The additional charges will be against a third suspect, not Gugliuzza or Loftus, said assistant district attorney Karen Kuebler.

The person is likely to be charged at an arraignment later this week, Kuebler said.

Penn State Police Services wouldn't discuss any additional rock-throwing arrests yesterday, but a supervisor said the case is still under investigation.

The charges won't be against the third man police mentioned in their initial report, Kuebler said.

Penn State police said they found three men in the roof area of the building while investigating the rock-throwing. The three said they were friends and acknowledged they weren't supposed to be on the roof, but said they were not throwing rocks, according to police.

One of the victims, Nikkimah Amin (sophomore-broadcast journalism) yesterday said she was shocked when she and two of her friends were walking back from a computer lab last month and were caught under a barrage of silver-dollar-sized rocks.

Amin said it's possible the attack had nothing to do with their race, but it had that appearance.

"It seemed like the people up there were only throwing it at us," Amin said.

Gugliuzza and Loftus could not be reached for comment.
