I had seen the movie PCU on Comedy Central a million times before I came up to Penn State and I took the movie as an exaggeration of protests on college campuses. Not once did I believe that there could be truth in this stupid but extremely entertaining movie.
Now that I have lived on campus for six weeks and read many issues of the Collegian, I am not impressed by the attitude of the numerous demonstrations. Students protest about issues ranging from the campus judicial system to whatever the flag burners were upset about. I never thought that feminists like those in the movie actually exist and write many letters to the school newspaper outlining the reasons that they feel offended.
Of course, I realize that many protests are justified and right in their opinions, but what are they accomplishing by burning a flag or wearing a football helmet to President Spanier's speech? If something is not right on campus, I'm sure there are ways to get involved and try to change things.
Isn't that what student government organizations are for?
And so I urge everyone who is reading this letter to take a deep breath, stop looking for things to be offended about, and have a good time in these precious few college years of our life. Trade those placards for a Frisbee.
Your life will be better for it.
