Letter to the Editor
On-campus racism is only perpetuated by ignorance
OK, hold up, Don Edmond. That is, if it is OK for me to say hold up, because I'm not really sure if that is a white saying or not. To say that I was mildly offended by your letter would be an understatement. Being a white, Protestant male the trifecta if you will as far as supposed rights in this country are concerned I was very surprised and disappointed by the ignorance displayed in your letter. To say it is offensive when "white students running around after FUBU-wearing 'wannabes' that cruise campus banging black music they cannot understand" is both hypocritical and devoid of thought. If you have ever listened to what an overwhelming percentage of rappers have to say, it is about violence, girls, partying and believe it or not, sometimes unity. With your type of reasoning, black people are therefore not allowed to listen to Eminem. How could you ever possibly understand what he's talking about? He's white. Not to mention all the other music out there by white performers. By making a comment like that, you are undermining what a lot "your type" of musicians stand for. Oh yeah, I have another question: Who's allowed to listen to Run DMC and Aerosmith's "Walk This Way"? Is that for all of us or nobody? Another point I want to discuss is your statement of how white people could never understand black music they listen to. Give me a break. If there are people who can "really" understand the music, chances are they are here with the help of affirmative action. But according to you, the government and Penn State do nothing to help minorities receive fair treatment. Now, I have black relatives and friends and I have seen it from the other side. But I'm sorry, Don, minorities need to stop blaming every little thing on not being white. I know plenty of white girls who date black guys. Do you think I sit around and complain that it's because I'm white that I don't get the girls? In reference to your comment about girls throwing themselves in front of traffic to avoid being on the same block with a black man, I also know plenty of girls who would cross the street if there was some surly looking white guys coming their way. I know that the minorities of this country are still being oppressed, but let's find a better, more intelligent way of expressing it.
