Officers will honor comrade at funeral

A State College police officer who died Friday during training exercises will be buried today.

Officer Earl Matthew Isenberg, 29, collapsed Friday morning following a physical training run. He was pronounced dead an hour after being taken to Grandview Hospital in Sellersville, Pa.

His funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. today at St. Mary's Church in Hollidaysburg.

The father of a six-month-old son, John, Isenberg is also survived by his wife, Jacqueline.

Isenberg joined the State College Police Department on July 5 and was attending the Southeast Training Academy in Schwenksville, Pa., when he died. He would have graduated on Oct. 24.

Lt. Diane Conrad said Isenberg had not yet begun patrol at State College, but his arrival was anticipated.

"He came highly recommended," Conrad said. "We were certainly looking forward to him being a member of the department."

Prior to joining the State College police, Isenberg was a captain in the U.S. Army for four years. He also was a police officer for two and a half years at Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C.

Conrad said he left Washington for State College to move closer to his hometown of Hollidaysburg. "He thought this was a nice place for (his son) to grow up," she said.

Officers from both the Washington, D.C., and State College police will attend today's service, which will include a police car procession. "We'll be sending as many officers here as we can," Conrad said.

State College police officers have been wearing black mourning bands on their badges in memory of Isenberg since his death Friday.

Conrad said her department is grieving for its lost comrade.

"Everybody is sad, just like anyone who lost a fellow member of his force would be," she said.
