Band to bring Seattle-style back to Crowbar
Days of the New will stop on College Ave. tomorrow night during their national tour.

Years after their favorite musical genre commercially disappeared, grunge fans get a chance to wear their flannel shirts one more time when Days of the New plays tomorrow at Crowbar, 420 E. College Ave.

The group, led by precocious frontman Travis Meeks, is touring the nation with a set that includes new material from an upcoming album and hits from the band's first two full-length releases.

Meeks and his band released its eponymous first album in 1997 when Meeks was just 17. He promptly fired his fellow musicians and hired a new band to record a second album, released in 1999 and also titled Days of the New.

Both albums drew comparisons to Alice in Chains and Soundgarden upon release, and grunge fans hail Days of the New for being one of the few bands that still plays the style of music that made Seattle famous in the early '90s.

Days of the New's third album does not yet have an official street date, but MTV News reported in July that the album has been completed and will hit stores by the end of 2000. It is expected to be self-titled like its two predecessors.

It is expected to touch upon the same grunge territory as Days of the New's first two albums, and one track is said to include a 30-piece orchestra, conducted by Meeks.

The new album is not the only Days of the New recording slated for future release. Fans can hear the band on the long-rumored Doors tribute album, Stoned Immaculate: The Music of the Doors, which Elektra Records will finally release on Nov. 14.

Days of the New puts forth two songs on the compilation; covers of "L.A. Woman" and "The End." Aerosmith, Stone Temple Pilots and Creed also contribute their own takes on Doors classics to Stoned Immaculate. There will also be three songs featuring vocals by late Doors singer Jim Morrison, "Roadhouse Blues," "Roadhouse Rap" and "The Cosmic Movie."

A version of "The End" with Meeks on vocals was also taped for an upcoming installment of VH1's Storytellers series, with the surviving members of the Doors backing Meeks up musically. The show is expected to air over Thanksgiving weekend.

While it is unknown whether Days of the New will perform either of its Doors covers tomorrow, the band has plenty of its own hits to choose from. They include "Enemy," "The Down Town" and "Touch, Peel and Stand," which held a record for most consecutive weeks at No. 1 on Billboard's Active radio charts until Creed's "Higher" knocked it off earlier this year.

Electrasy, an alternative pop quintet out of the United Kingdom, will open the show.
