When it comes to regular season Big Ten games, the No. 6 Penn State women's soccer team has had all the other teams' number.
The Nittany Lions (8-2-1, 2-0 Big Ten) have an 11-game winning streak in conference play and a 13-game unbeaten streak. The Lions' last regular season Big Ten loss came on Oct. 16, 1998, when they dropped a 1-0 decision at Northwestern.
When was their last conference loss at home? For that, go all the way back to Oct. 1, 1995, when Minnesota downed Penn State 2-0. Since that game, the Lions have amassed a 16-0-3 conference record at Jeffrey Field.
More records for Welsh
Lions sophomore Christie Welsh grabbed two more Penn State records in this past weekend's action and continued to build her lead in another.
Against Indiana, Welsh netted two goals just 16 seconds rt. And in doing so, broke the Penn State record for quickest two goals in a game and quickest two goals in a game by the same player. The last of which, Welsh used her foot like Tiger Woods uses his sand wedge and chipped the ball over the head of the oncoming Hoosiers goalkeeper.
"Most of her clean looks tonight, she finished," Penn State women's soccer coach Pat Farmer said after the game.
"Two out of the three. The other one was just bizarre. The last one I don't know what that is. That's a goal scorers goal."
In the same game, Welsh scored her fifth career hat trick and second of the season. She is Penn State's all-time leader in hat tricks and hasn't even played half of her career yet.
For her four-goal and nine-point weekend, Welsh was named the Big Ten Player of the Week.
Upset City
For any Big Ten team outside of Pennsylvania, it was not a good weekend to be one of the conference leaders.
Michigan, which entered last weekend with a No. 24 ranking, was defeated on its home turf by Wisconsin. And Michigan State, which had a perfect record, squeaked out a 2-1 overtime win at Iowa, but then was handed their first loss of the season at the hands of Illinois.
Despite their loss, the Wolverines still hold a share of the Big Ten lead along with the Badgers, with each team having nine points. Penn State follows in third place with six points in one less game.
Quote of the week
"That (having so many injuries) drives you crazy. That's one of the things that you wish you could control, but you can't."
-Indiana coach Joe Kelley
