Speaking out is proactive, but respect the community

I do agree with William Whitmore that if students were more proactive they would have a powerful voice within this community. However, I disagree with his claim that Centre County is not a tourist area as it hosts thousands of visitors every year. What about the National Governors' Convention and 90,000-plus football games? The Bryce Jordan Center's events? Arts Festival? Centre County is one of the fastest growing counties in Pennsylvania.

I believe West Campus is focused on expanding Penn State's research facilities, which is a significant source of revenue for the university. I highly doubt that anything will happen to the golf courses. Just out of curiosity, when was the last time Penn State actually constructed a paved parking lot for Beaver Stadium? I guess The Bryce Jordan Center's lot could be up for question, although the grass space per paved space ratio appears to be fairly significant.

I agree with Whitmore's problem regarding the corporate sponsorship of Penn State facilities. I thought weight rooms were supposed to be named after athletes. What's next? Renaming the Laptop Library to the HiWay Pizza Cyber Center?

I do think Penn State students are a little rude and destructive downtown. Although, I believe our sometimes arrogant borough police force is partly to blame. I feel that they could handle situations better if they had respect for the entire community — not only a handful of "townies" and the "State College Landlord-Towing Industrial Complex." Most of the officers could stand to be a bit more professional and less police-show star.

I feel that we students are an important part of this community both in size and substance. We should be constructive and smart with how we communicate our concerns with those in power and not approach it as "rage against the Penn State-State College borough machine."

On thing to remember is that, "We are Penn State." We are 40,000-plus students in size who leave every summer and eventually graduate. Our time here should be spent constructively contributing — not raping — our community.
