The Napster issue has suddenly hit a painful low. As a student new to the main campus environment, I find it hard to believe that a letter sent from the lawyer or lawyers of two angry industry individuals should have any impact on the decisions of this university. It seemed like an obvious bluff, for how could Metallica and Dr. Dre sue every university in this country for using Napster? Moreover, the idea behind Napster is no different than that which has enabled the citizens of this free country to use cassette tapes and videotapes to have so-called "copyrighted material." Banning Napster to help with university bandwidth and viral infections was a good call, but banning it for the sake of fear from any lawsuits or scrutiny will live in many minds as nothing short of ridiculous. Come on Penn State, take a stand here.
