A former Penn State student was found guilty of aggravated assault and simple assault Friday in connection with a domestic dispute last fall.
Mark Bologna, 21, was convicted of kicking and punching his girlfriend on her back and head during an argument on November 12, 1999. His sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 14.
Centre County District Attorney Ray Gricar said Friday that he had not yet decided what sentencing he will seek. Aggravated assault, a first-degree felony, mandates jail time, but the length of incarnation could vary, Gricar said.
The punishment could range from a short sentence in a county jail to a more extended sentence in a state prison, he said.
Gricar hopes Bologna's conviction will send a message to other domestic abusers.
"Anytime we convict somebody. . .we hope that will be a deterrent to like behavior," he said.
Bologna's attorney, Joseph Amendola, could not be reached for comment.
According to the police criminal complaint, the following events occurred in the early morning hours of November 12.
Bologna and the victim, also a Penn State student, met at his apartment, 329 E. Beaver Avenue, before getting pizza and going to a local bar. During a belated 21st birthday celebration, Bologna consumed several shots of alcohol.
Bologna and the victim began discussing their relationship on the walk back to his apartment. At his apartment, Bologna followed the victim into the bathroom, shutting the door behind him. Bologna began yelling at the victim, calling her a "jealous freak."
The victim attempted to leave the bathroom, but Bologna blocked her way. Feeling tired and weak, she sat down on the bathroom floor. As Bologna continued to yell at her, she lied down on the floor.
Bologna then proceeded to kick her in the head with his bare foot. He also punched the victim in her face and head with his fist in a hammer type motion. During the attack, Bologna screamed "good for you" and "you deserve this." The victim told police Bologna kicked her four times and punched her four to five times until she faked passing out.
Bologna and the victim then both entered his bedroom where he apologized for the attack and tried to get her to lie down with him and sleep. The victim called police from another room, but Bologna saw her and grabbed the phone.
He began yelling at her again and chased the victim around the apartment, jumping on a table to grab her from behind. Bologna shoved the victim out of the apartment and against a wall. She fled down the elevator and met incoming police. The victim was taken by ambulance to Centre Community Hospital for treatment.
Bologna has not been registered as a Penn State student since spring semester, according to the Office of the Registrar.
