Anselmo honored for strong weekend showing

Senior co-captain Traci Anselmo was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week for women's field hockey.

She racked up 11 points during the weekend on five goals and one assist. For the season, Anselmo leads the team in scoring with 17 points, and goals with seven.

The Lady Lions played in two games the weekend and Anselmo came up big in both. Against No. 8 Connecticut, she tallied four of the Lions' five goals to lead Penn State to a 5-4 win. The four goals were a personal high.

Anselmo then notched a goal and an assist in the 2-0 shutout of No. 14 Boston College. Thanks in part to her efforts, the Lions are 5-2 overall.

This is the first time this season that Anselmo has received the Player of the Week honor. Last year, she was named Big Ten Player of the Week and National Player of the Week once, en route to a slew of honors, including regional all-American and first team all-conference.

No. 5 Penn State opens conference action this Saturday, Sept. 23 against the defending regular season Big Ten Champion Iowa. Action begins at noon.
